3d Printing Solutions prints Alien bust in natural size!

Ever-changing 3D printing technology applications never stop to impressing us! Particularly when they propose simpler and lower-cost solutions, instead of traditional construction methods. A sculpture, 3D printed by BigRep ONE – large scale 3D printer – is just the latest example.

3D Printing Solutions, a greek company specializing in large-scale 3D printing constructions, recently brought to life the legendary movie hero Alien, using 3d modeling and 3D printing. The sculpture is going to be part of an upcoming art installation.

Due to the large volume of the print, an appropriate modeling strategy got applied, “spliting” Alien into two symmetrical parts. Each part has a dimension of almost one meter and a thickness of about 30 cm. To save material and reduce both weight and cost, the statue is a cellular build internally. The printing process took place in the 3D Printing Solutions Lab and had a total duration of almost 48 hours.

During the post-process stage, the two parts got stuck together and further technical tasks were performed, such as caulking and scrubbing. Finally, Alien acquired his familiar countenance in the Art Lab, by adding colors and glaze. Watch Alien construction step by step:

Alien is a dark creature, first appeared in Rodley Scott’s homonymous science fiction thriller in 1979. This peculiar extraterrestrial figure starred then in many movies and video games, and recently returned to theaters in “Alien: Covenant”.
